![]() Metallica’s songwriting formula had been more-or-less melodic thrash metal since their formation in 1981, but the speed and aggression that typified their first album – Kill ’Em All, released in 1983 – had gradually been replaced by progressive musicianship across their three other 80s albums, Ride The Lightning (’84), Master Of Puppets (’86) and finally …And Justice For All (’88). In 1990 James Hetfield (vocals, guitar), Kirk Hammett (guitar), Jason Newsted (bass) and Lars Ulrich (drums) were four albums and a bunch of EPs into a successful B-league career, selling more albums than Slayer and Megadeth but not as many as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Metallica – for it is they – were and remain a foursome from San Francisco via Los Angeles and Denmark. Let’s see if we can pour oil on those troubled waters… A lot of metal fans are still gutted that this happened. It was also the year when the biggest-selling heavy metal band there has ever been, or ever will be, shook off their street-urchin roots and decided to get a proper job with a nice salary and fringe benefits. What a crazy year, eh? Madchester, the poll tax riots, German reunification, hello Mandela, goodbye Thatcher. ![]()
